Reading makes brain grow

A new study released from University of California has evidenced growth in brains that engage in persistent reading for pleasure, no matter what the reading skill level. As a non-neuroscientist, I don't have the vocabulary or understanding to interpret this technical paper, but an overview of the results doesn't hold any major surprises for me. It's agreed that the brain is plastic - that is, has the ability to change, for good or bad, throughout life - and it responds to repeated activity or stimulation. So the fact that it expands if we read continually isn't necessarily a profound insight, even if it takes in different reading levels. What are the benefits of expansion? What are the implications? Does expansion mean that reading is good for you necessarily? The study must be paid for, can be found here.
