Nice podcast on the brain and learning

Something for the mp3 player:

Three brain scientists talk about their work in brain science and learning and how it can be applied to the classroom. In summary:

Impulsivity control: Teaching programs that include play, physical activity, and movement are better than those that focus purely on academic pursuits. These activities have positive effects on executive functions. Enjoyment is key. Patience is key.

Games and cognitive benefits: Action and shooter games have a number of beneficial effects on how we think and make decisions - for example, better vision skills and better hand-eye co-ordination (detail, seeing contrast). Positive effects were also found on attention spans.

Vision and language: The brain changes if the instructor asks participants to focus on sound, or melody of speech. The act of focusing attention has a big impact on brain activity. Some learning disorders may simply be reflective of what children are attending to when learning to read etc. Lots of implications for teaching and learning.
